Diablo 3 vs WoW: Which Is It Gonna Be?

Diablo 3 vs World of Warcraft

The upcoming release of Diablo 3 leaves many fans faced with a tough decision.  Should I play Diablo 3 or stick with my current RPG?

For the last 10 years or so, most of the Diablo 2 fan-base has gradually moved on, looking for greener pastures in the newer, more cutting-edge RPGs.  A large majority of them have become involved in the insanely-popular Wolrd of Warcraft series, which was a logical evolution from the increasingly stale and rather basic Diablo 2 game world.  Now, with a shiny new version of Diablo 3 on the horizon, many will have to choose whether to continue playing World of Warcraft or to make the switch to Diablo 3. Have you given any thought to where each of these games will fit into your life?

Of course, these two games (or any other games for that matter) aren’t mutually exclusive. A gamer could certainly opt to play both. But come on, let’s be realistic. With the amount of time and energy typically devoted to playing games like these, there is really only room for one of them in the average gamer’s life.  A single role-playing game has MORE than enough addictive and immersive content to evaporate any and all of a part-time gamer’s limited free time.  At least that’s been my experience.

Allow me to explain.

It was my sophmore year of college and I had grown comfortable with my new lifestyle of near limitless freedom and virtually unlimited distractions. For the most part, I was able to keep my life on track by making it to class on time, studying for my exams, and keeping my binge drinking to a minimum.  Well, a minimum compared to most of the people around me. So basically I was successfully embracing the vast majority of my adult responsibilities.  Easy stuff, right?

…….and then I discovered Diablo 2.

Needless to say, my academic and social life came to a screeching halt. My days were filled with unending gaming sessions consisting of 100′s of “Meph runs”, constant character powerleveling in the Cow King level with friends, and the relelentless pursuit to acquire the best Diablo 2 gear I could possibly find for each of my numerous characters.  Thus, I received a glorious introduction to what some people refer to as “consequences”.

My grades slipped, I lost touch with friends, and for the next year my increasingly pale body slowly molded into the fabric of my computer chair.  Honestly though, I loved every gluttonous minute of it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Well, apparently, heartbeats for me are spaced about three years apart because in 2004 I was introduced to World of Warcraft.

At this point in my life, I had graduated college, gotten a real job, moved in with my girlfriend, and done a bit more maturing.  I was done wasting countless hours in front of a game. I’m not saying I stopped playing video games, but I just didn’t get completely sucked into them and lose track of entire weeks at a time.  That was until a co-worker introduced me to World of Warcraft.

WoW for me was like Diablo 2 on steroids. There were more places to explore, more character classes to level, more group activities to tackle and way, WAY more hours required to do it all. I’ll spare you the gorey details, but let’s just say I got hooked.  Not in a completely life-destroying, relationship-ending type of way…but I had definitely found a new dark mistress.

Occasionally my girlfriend would complain that it was a waste of money to spend $14.95 every month just to play a game.  However, I explained to her that it actually ended up being cheaper than playing “normal” games.  While I was playing World of Warcraft, I didn’t really find myself playing any other games.  There weren’t nearly as many PS3 rentals and almost no other computer game purchases.  While I was playing WoW, I had my hands full with all there was to do in that game alone. There wasn’t any time to play anything else!

And so, this brings us full circle.  If you’re like me, you completely immerse yourself in a game and give it everything you’ve got. Which one is gonna be?  Will it be the shiny new Diablo 3 or the tried and true World of Warcraft (or any other current MMORPG for that matter)?  You can’t serve two masters. Or can you?

I’m really interested in hearing your opinions on this one, so I’ve created a quick poll which I’ll place below this post.

Looking forward to the results!
