Getting Started In Diablo 3 – Creating Your First Character

by Jassper of The Diablo 3 Leveling Guide

Diablo 3 Character Creation ScreenSo the time has finally arrived and you’ve gotten your hands on a copy of Diablo 3 (or at least the beta…). You’re staring at the character selection screen trying to imagine which of the 10 class/gender combinations will be the most fun to play.

Which character should you choose first?

After all, each has its pros and cons and offers unique benefits and skill sets to amplify the fun of a particular style of gaming.

Well, I know how you feel and I would like to provide you with some insights into each class to help you make this big decision. You’ll most likely be devoting many hours of gaming to this new character so it’s definitely important to make sure you like him or her!

As most of you know, you have 5 classes to choose from and each class can be played as either a male or female character, thus 10 possible combinations.

These classes, in no particular order, are:

Demon Hunter
Witch Doctor

Selecting a Class and Gender

Now, each of these classes most certainly provides more than ample fun factor and firepower to blast your way through the levels of D3, but the big question is “how do you prefer to play?”.

The barbarian’s style resembles that of a bull in a china shop. That is to say, if you like a somewhat no-frills, brute force approach to leveling, the barbarian might be the right choice for you. With abilities like the famous Whirlwind and the newly-added Earthquake, the barbarian provides a highly durable and competent choice for your new Diablo 3 character.

The wizard, on the other hand, is a completely different animal. Significantly less heavily armored than the barbarian, the wizard is best suited to those players who prefer to maintain a fairly safe distance from their enemies while raining down arcane destruction upon them. The wizard’s style of game-play requires a bit more finesse than the barbarian but is equally as exhilarating.

The demon hunter is one of the new character classes added to Diablo. Excelling in ranged attacks and trapping, the demon hunter offers many opportunities for developing a creative style of game-play. If you’ve enjoyed hunter and rogue classes in other RPGs, you’ll find that the demon hunter is somewhat of a hybrid of both.

The monk is another awesome choice for those who enjoy melee combat. Their skills are great fun to execute and the character animations are cool to watch. Even with the limited skills available in the beta, it’s obvious that this class is going to allow for a fast-moving, frenzied, and exciting style of gaming…if you’re into that sort of thing.

The witch doctor is a good option for players who want a bit of everything. The witch doctor gives you control over pets, magic and melee abilities, all seamlessly woven into a truly interesting force to be reckoned with. Early experiences with the witch doctor have led some players to believe that this class could possibly become the ultimate choice for power leveling, similar to the necromancer in Diablo 2. We shall see…

What’s In a Name?

Once you’ve chosen your character class and gender, you’ll need to choose your character’s name. While this is a fairly straight-forward process, there are a couple of guidelines to keep in mind.

Diablo 3 character names will need to adhere to the naming guidelines set forth by Blizzard. Basically that means you will need to avoid anything copyrighted, racist, overtly sexual, or otherwise offensive in nature. This may not seems like a big deal now, but take it from someone who has “pushed the envelope” with character names in some of Blizzard’s other games.  After you’ve spent months building up your character’s reputation and establishing yourself as the one and only “BoobsMcGee” in town, it kind of takes the wind out of your sails when Blizzard forces you to rename her.

* A complete list of naming guidelines can be found on the Blizzard website here *

Wrap Up

That about concludes this quick look at the character creation process in Diablo 3. Regardless of which character you’ve chosen to play, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that you’re probably going to enjoy it. After playing quite a bit with each of the 5 classes, I can honestly say that I’d have a very hard time choosing a favorite at this point.
